Logs, which are processed manually, have unique forms: bows, bumps, and sweeps. “A wild Canadian log home” – what’s that?

While building wooden houses there are several ways to erect log walls, fit the corners, prepare the material, and apply special tools. They are Russian, Norwegian or Canadian cutting.

Russian Cutting

In Russia and Ukraine the Russian log home is the most common, which is characterized by a connection “in a bowl” (a semicircular notch with a groove selected by the half of the log diameter). When cutting “in a bowl” logs are stacked so that log ends stand out of the wall surface by about 20-40 centimeters. While stacking the logs “in a bowl” the logs are laid with a bowl both down and up – “in a saddle”. However this cutting method has a disadvantage – due to a rounded shape of the cup during drying some cracks appear that require recurrent caulking. Also the weight is distributed unevenly loading the grooves and undoing the bowls.

Norwegian Cutting

In Europe Norwegian cutting is more common, in which instead of roundwood they use half-timber (half-beam) – a log evenly hewed on two sides with a diameter of no less than 300 – 350 mm. A feature of this cutting method is a special design of “the bowl” of a rectangular shape that in the course of drying tightens up the walls of the log home and eliminates all gaps. But still this method has a drawback – during drying more cracks appear than during cutting a solid log, because during processing natural structure of the wood is damaged.

Canadian Cutting

Though a Canadian log home was introduced in Ukraine not long ago, it is becoming more popular. It combines the best of the Russian and Norwegian cutting methods, namely: having borrowed the Russian way of laying walls with solid logs, corners are fitted by a special V-shaped bowl which, just like in the Norwegian method, in the course of drying tightens up the walls of the log home and eliminates all gaps. Our firm constructs wooden houses, cottages, chalets, country houses (dachas), bathhouses solely on the Canadian cutting method by hand, employing highly skilled professionals and tools of leading European producers.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

A wooden house built with logs shrinks within 1 up to 5 days after erection depending on the region. Log home building technology suggests an annual supervision of the shrinkage. We provide quality maintenance of log homes which we have built.

Taking into account the use of natural materials in the construction, in the production process timber is treated with a special preservative agent for wood bio-defense that, being safe for people, inhibits the development of mold, wood-staining and wood-destroying fungi, and repels pests.
